evaporator coil from BC ExpressWithout an evaporator coil, an air conditioner would literally be useless. The evaporator coil is also called the indoor coil, and it’s where an air conditioner pumps chilled refrigerant.

During a hot summer, the A/C doesn’t cool the home by blowing cold air inside. It compresses and chills refrigerant, and then sends that to the evaporator coil. The fan motor in the furnace pulls air from the home, and forces it  through the coil.

Evaporator Coil Efficiency

A clean coil is an efficient coil. When the A/C is running and warm air is forced through the chilled coil, water condensates on the coil. This creates a damp interior that is a prime spot for mold to grow. If mold grows on your coil it will affect efficiency and even indoor air quality. UV lamps kill airborne and surface mold and bacteria.

When an Evaporator Coil Isn’t Needed

If you heat your home with something other than a furnace, then you’ll not have an evaporator coil. Instead, the coil will be contained in an air handler, which also houses a fan motor for circulating air throughout the home.
